Reflections in Time is a photo series exploring the evolution of fashion photography and portraiture through self-portraits. This project features a single subject- myself- and emulates the iconic styles of various renowned photographers across different decades. From Edward Steichen to Jim Goldberg, this project visualizes how photography has significantly changed, not just due to the passage of time and the development of new technology, but also because of personal styles and techniques. With complete control over every aspect of the photo, I can adopt distinct styles and techniques from historical and contemporary photographers, demonstrating how different photography approaches can drastically alter an image’s visual and emotional impact, even with the same subject, camera, and photographer.

Edward Steichen

An active photographer from the late 1800s into the 1950s, Steichen was a pioneer in fashion photography. Steichen’s vintage feel and non-conventional lighting techniques have been recreated here with a simple set-up using two model lights.

Irving Penn

Penn's work spans from the 1940s to the 2000s and was well-known for many of his iconic images, not excluding his corner portraits. In this photo I’ve put myself in his corner with my own camera slung over my shoulder.

Richard Avedon

Known for his lively action shots, Avedon was taking photos from the 1940s to the early 2000s. For this image, I’ve recreated his famous photo of Cindy Crawford using my ow poses.

Lillian Bassman

Bassman worked commercially from the 1940s to the ‘60s and returned to photography in the ‘90s, turning her interest in darkroom techniques into an interest in Photoshop, where she was able to recreate her iconic style. For this photo, I’ve done the same as Bassman- recreated darkroom techniques like dodging and burning in Photoshop.

Sarah Moon

Moon studied under Lillian Bassman and has been a working photographer since the 1960s. She’s known for her painting-like images, and here I have re-created her style through Photoshop.

Lindsay Adler

Known for her highly saturated gel portraits, Adler has been photographing since the early 2000s. In this photo, I’ve experimented with different colored gels to recreate Adler’s style.

Zhong Lin

Lin, from Malaysia and based in Taiwan, rose to fame after her project during the COVID-19 lockdowns entitled “Project 365”. Lin likes to incorporate natural elements, like flowers and plants into her photos, so I decided to take her use of these elements to make a portrait similar to hers’.

Jim Goldberg

Since the 80s, Goldberg has been known for his multimedia photography, where he physically writes and draws on his photos, not excluding collages. Here, I’ve taken all the photos I made for this project, including images I omitted from the final edit, and created a collage similar to one of Goldberg’s.
